Music conference: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Presentation
On Tuesday 14 January 2025 at 6.30 pm, the Cassis Cultural Centre will be presenting a musical conference:
Ludwig Van Beethoven
Presented by Jean-Michel Sanchez
Doctor of History of Art
Musicologist
Born in Bonn on 15 or 16 December 1770 and died in Vienna on 26 March 1827 at the age of 56.
The last great representative of Viennese classicism (after Gluck, Haydn and Mozart), Beethoven paved the way for Romanticism in music and influenced Western music for much of the 19th century. Unclassifiable ("You give me the impression of a man with many heads, many hearts, many souls", said Haydn to him around 1793), his art was expressed through different musical genres, and although his symphonic music was the main source of his popularity, he also had a considerable impact on piano writing and chamber music.
Overcoming by sheer force of will the trials of a life marked by deafness, which struck him at the age of 27, and celebrating in his music the triumph of heroism and joy when fate imposed isolation and misery on him, he was rewarded post-mortem with this statement by Romain Rolland: "He is much more than the first of musicians. He is the most heroic force in modern art". An expression of an unshakeable faith in mankind and a willful optimism, the affirmation of a free and independent artist, Beethoven's work made him one of the most influential figures in the history of music.
Indoors in the large conference room of the Centre Culturel.
6:00pm: Doors open.
6.30pm: Conference begins.
