On Tuesday 17 November at 6.30 pm, the Cassis Cultural Centre is hosting a talk to mark the Portofino é Cassis Italian market:
Lucca – Tuscany

This one-hour-and-fifteen-minute talk aims to take you on a fresh journey through Lucca (Lucques in French), even if you think you already know this city, which is less overrun by tourists than Florence.
The talk will be accompanied by a slideshow of the speaker’s own photographs. The focus is on the unusual, hidden heritage and unexpected subjects such as these, for example:

- The ‘finestrelle’ (small windows for children);
- The painting that depicts the roundness of the Earth for the first time;
- The elliptical Piazza dell’Arena in Lucca, the labyrinth of the Duomo – the last chance of mercy for those condemned to death – and the monolith of San Frediano;
- 19th-century figures on the 13th-century façade of Michele in Foro;
- The lake in Lucca’s Botanical Gardens – the last mirror of Lucida Mansi; Puccini as an organist in Lucca;
- When Napoleon’s sister (Elisa) ruled Lucca and Tuscany;
- The ‘rebellious’ window of Palazzo Bernardini;
- Lucca’s Liberty (Art Nouveau) district, and the Liberty-style seaside resort of Viareggio;
- The Santo Volto, said to have been sculpted immediately after the crucifixion;
- The Museum of Emigration, or the time when the Tuscans set off for ‘La Merica’…;
- Leonardo da Vinci’s terracotta Archangel in the little village of San Gennaro;
- The oak tree from which Pinocchio was hanged in the first episode of his adventures;
- The Order of the Knights of the Tau, the world’s first military religious order;
- Trees at the top of a tower, and cheap accommodation with the nuns of Serravezza;
- Giusti’s fabulous focaccia in Lucca;
And many other unusual places and little-known topics…
Practical information:
Held indoors in the Cultural Centre’s main conference hall.
6.00 pm: Doors open.
6.30 pm: Start of the lecture.
Price: €10 per person – €5 for CCC members
Unnumbered seating (free choice of seats).
The organisers reserve the right to change the venue of the lecture and, if necessary, to move it to another venue located near the Cultural Centre.
